Description
The Collie is an active and agile dog. This breed has two types; long and short coats. Trim but muscular the body is slightly longer then it is tall. The chest is wide and strong. The ears of the Collie are also erect 3/4 with the tips folded forward.


Size
The height of an adult male Collie is 24-26 inches and females are 22-24 inches. A male Collie weighs 60-75 lbs. and females 50-65 lbs.


Coat
Collies come in rough - long coat and smooth - short coat. Both varieties are double coated. The undercoat is soft and furry and the outer coat should be straight and harsh to the touch.


Color
The Collie comes in various standard colors including; black white & tan, blue merle, blue merle & white, blue merle white & tan, sable, sable & white, sable merle, sable merle & white, white, and white merle.


Temperament
The Collie is a friendly breed that gets along with pets and other dogs. They are intelligent, loving and sensitive. Collies are playful and gentle.


Care
The long coat Collie should be groomed weekly. Brush with a brush to remove excess hair. The short haired type needs minimal grooming.


Exercise
Collies needs plenty of exercise, preferably some of it off the leash.


Training
This breed is intelligent and they should be gently trained to avoid from not cooperating. They can be willful.


Shedding
Rough and Smooth Collies shed. Daily brushing is needed during shedding season.


Barking & Howling
Some Collies, especially those who are high-strung or bored, are often too quick to sound the alarm at every new sight and sound.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Collie can live about 14-16 years.


Health
Generally Collies are healthy dogs. Some bred from inferior stock can have eye defects and hip problems.
